Even though gas prices are $3.50 a gallon, it hasn't stopped college kids from as far away as Iowa from making spring break pilgrimages to Daytona Beach, Florida. Many are squeezing more people into a single vehicle to save money, as well as making food to bring with them on the road rather then eating at restaurants.

A tough winter in much of the country is still prompting students to escape to Florida's sunny climate, despite the rising cost of fuel and recent airfare increases. The cost of hotel rooms remains the same as last year, which makes it a good deal once students get to the city. March is the third-biggest tourism month in Daytona Beach after June and July, and the city even holds promotional events at some college campuses to promote spring break travel. Overall, Florida is the king of spring break, with Orlando topping Las Vegas as the No. 1 destination this year.

Coleslaw wrestling during Bike Week is a unique Daytona Beach, Florida tradition. The event happens each year at Sopotnick's Cabbage Patch Bar in Samsula, where visitors know that Wednesdays are the day for coleslaw wrestling. The cabbage-laden match-ups get pretty messy, so they are held outdoors where choppers flying overhead can zoom in on the action.

This odd tradition dates back to the 1930's when Sopotnick's was first opened, but it is not the only wacky contest the bar is known for. It also boasts a wet T-shirt contest and other competitions throughout the year. The weather this year was a lot more favorable for the coleslaw wrestling than last year, when temperatures hovered in the low 50s during an unusual Florida cold spell. This is an important factor since the coleslaw wrestling involves bikini-clad women.
